About this course.
The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course is a short online course about the step from sailing for fun to being paid to skipper or crew. It isn't about boat handling. It covers the legal duties, safety management and risk thinking expected of someone responsible for paying passengers, crew and a commercial vessel.
It's compulsory for anyone applying for their first RYA Commercial Endorsement and for holders revalidating one. There are no entry requirements. You study online at your own pace, and some training centres also offer classroom support.
Who it suits
- RYA Yachtmaster, Powerboat or other certificate holders who want to work commercially under the RYA system
- Existing Commercial Endorsement holders due to revalidate
- Delivery skippers, charter skippers and instructors thinking about a marine career
What you'll actually do
You work through online modules on your own schedule. The course places professional small-craft work in its wider maritime context, then covers correct manning, keeping your competence current, operating a vessel under a safety management system, carrying and maintaining required safety equipment, and assessing and controlling risk. On completion you receive a PPR certificate, which the RYA says is valid for your first Commercial Endorsement application or your next renewal.
Key ideas explained
- Commercial Endorsement — an add-on to certain RYA certificates that allows the holder to work on some small commercial vessels in the RYA/UK framework. The RYA states it lasts up to five years, and revalidation requires recent sea service and a valid medical certificate (see the RYA's commercial endorsement guidance).
- Duty of care — once people pay to be aboard, the skipper carries legal responsibility for their safety, and "I didn't know" is not a defence.
- Manning — having enough suitably qualified people aboard for the vessel, the passage and the conditions, not just the legal minimum.
- Safety management — written procedures for routine and emergency operations, drills, and records that show the procedures are actually followed.
- Risk assessment — identify hazards, judge how likely and how serious each is, then reduce the risk with controls such as briefings, equipment or simply changing the plan.
Where it fits
| Stage | Suggested course |
|---|---|
| Before | An RYA certificate that can be commercially endorsed, e.g. from the Yachtmaster exam or Powerboat Level 2 |
| This course | Compulsory professional-responsibility module |
| Alongside | The RYA's other endorsement requirements, such as sea survival training and a medical certificate; check the RYA's current list |
Getting ready
- Set aside a few quiet sessions; it's reading-heavy rather than practical
- Think through real situations from your own sailing, since the risk-assessment material lands better that way
- Check the RYA's current endorsement checklist before you apply, as the requirements change from time to time
Good to know in Australia
- Commercial vessel operations in Australian waters are regulated nationally by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which issues its own certificates of competency. An RYA Commercial Endorsement is not a substitute, so check AMSA before working on a vessel in Australia.
- PPR is most useful for Australians planning to work on boats in the UK or in other places that recognise RYA commercial qualifications.
What you learn.
- Understand a commercial skipper's legal responsibilities
- Apply correct manning requirements
- Keep professional skills up to date
- Manage commercial vessel operations safely
- Carry and maintain compulsory safety equipment
- Carry out risk assessments and put risk controls in place
