Policies are issued by **Allianz Australia**, with Club Marine handling your cover and claims.

## The story
Club Marine started life in Melbourne in 1959 as **Marine Hull & Liability**, set up by insurance broker **Fred Wilson** to support the city's fledgling boat dealers, back when most pleasure boats were timber dinghies and launches. It became Marine Hull Club in the late 1970s and **Club Marine in 1986** as it spread around the country. Mercantile Mutual took it over in the early 1990s, and **Allianz** bought it in 2003. Its bimonthly Club Marine magazine turned 40 in 2025 and has a print run of more than 70,000.
## What stands out
- **One policy for the lot:** boat, motor(s), trailer, equipment, gear and accessories. - **Emergency assistance up to $10,000:** fuel delivery, getting your boat transported, and up to five nights' accommodation if you're stranded. 24/7 Club Marine Assist also covers roadside help for your car and trailer. - **Generous personal effects:** $30,000 in total ($3,000 per item), the highest in independent comparison site BestBoatInsurance's mainstream line-up. - **Racing included:** sailboat racing is covered as standard up to 150 nm from the coast. - **Choose your repairer:** nominate your own shipwright or mechanic (Club Marine can request an approved alternative in some cases). - **Rewards for staying claim-free:** a no-claim bonus of up to 25% off your premium, plus lay-up cover and a choice of excess to manage cost. - **Member extras:** the magazine and discounts from retail partners.
## Good to know
- **Market value is the default.** If you want agreed value, ask for it and check it's on your schedule. - Standing rigging over 10 years old is excluded unless agreed in writing, so yacht owners should keep rigging receipts. - Premiums usually sit above budget generalist insurers. You're paying for specialist cover and claims staff.
## How it compares
Against the other big specialists, Club Marine's strengths are breadth (from jet skis to houseboats), the $10,000 emergency benefit and personal effects cover. For a yacht-only policy with agreed value built in, also quote Pantaenius. For a brand-new dealer boat, Nautilus gives two years of agreed value automatically. If you'd like to choose your underwriter, try New Wave.
## Questions to ask before you buy
- Is my boat insured for **agreed value or market value**, and what's the figure? - What's my **navigation limit**, and does it cover the trips I actually do? - For yachts: how old is my **standing rigging**, and is it covered? - How much **no-claim bonus** do I qualify for now?
