About Cruising Yacht Club of Australia
If you've ever watched the Boxing Day start of the Sydney Hobart, you've seen the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia at work. From its marina on Rushcutters Bay at Darling Point, the CYCA has grown from a handful of wartime cruising enthusiasts into one of the best-known ocean racing clubs in the world, with more than 3,500 members today.
The marina can berth yachts up to 30 metres, and the clubhouse, fully renovated in 2018, has restaurants and function rooms looking straight out over the bay. Racing is what defines the place, though: harbour and inshore series year-round, a busy offshore calendar, and the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which the club has run every year since 1945.
It's also more welcoming to newcomers than its reputation suggests. Youth sailing, women's keelboat racing and crew-placement programs are all built to get people onto boats, whether or not they own one. If crewing offshore is on your bucket list, there are few better places in Australia to start.
