About Warrnambool Yacht Club
Where the Southern Ocean meets the coast of south-west Victoria, Warrnambool Yacht Club runs a program that is small in scale but plainly serious about sailing. The club describes itself as a small but active, family-orientated sailing club, and it operates as a registered Child Safe sports club from the western end of Lady Bay in Warrnambool. It is an affiliated member club of Australian Sailing, with Commodore Don as the published point of contact, Racing and Social membership options on offer, and enquiries handled by email and through the club's Facebook page.
The season stretches from early October through to Easter, and the fleet's character is set by two classic performance dinghy classes. Warrnambool is one of Victoria's enduring Fireball clubs: as of October 2023, Fireball Australia listed it among the state's four main class strongholds alongside Geelong, Frankston and Cairn Curran. Its sailors also campaign the Australian Sharpie, with Don and Glenda Allen, sailing with Lucas Shears, representing the club at the 2024 Australian Sharpie Nationals in the Over 50 and Country divisions.
The club's most visible recent step has been on the participation front. In 2025 it signed up, alongside Portland Yacht Club, to the Western Region Discover Sailing Participation program, an initiative backed by the Victorian Government's Strengthening Regional Community Sport Program and designed to lift entry-level sailing in the state's west. For a volunteer club on an exposed ocean coast, that combination of hard-won racing heritage and structured recruitment defines the current chapter, and it positions the club well for the seasons ahead.
