About Pantaenius Australia
If you dream of crossing oceans, Pantaenius is probably already on your shortlist. It's one of the world's best-known specialist yacht insurers, with **around 110,000 customers** and offices across Europe and Australia. The Australian arm runs from **Warriewood**, a short drive from Pittwater.
## At a glance - **Best for:** bluewater cruisers, racing yachts, higher-value boats and sailors heading overseas - **Covers:** sailing yachts, sailing boats and motor yachts (not jet skis, tinnies or trailer boats) - **Liability:** up to $10 million - **Claims:** in-house specialists and a 24/7 worldwide claims line
## The story Pantaenius began in **1899**, when Johann C. Pantaenius founded a marine insurance brokerage in Hamburg. The yacht business as we know it came later: **Harald Baum** joined in 1963, took over in 1970, and developed a new kind of hull insurance for yachts that changed how they were insured. The yacht business became its own company in the late 1990s, and it's still family-run. Harald's children Daniel, Martin and Anna now lead it. In 2024 Pantaenius celebrated 125 years.
## Two ways to insure your yacht | | **All Risk** | **Prime** | |---|---|---| | Suits | Newer or higher-value yachts | Older yachts, lower premium | | Cover | All risks | Accidental loss or damage | | Total loss pays | The **agreed fixed value**, no deductions | Up to **market value** |
Having both options is rare. BestBoatInsurance notes that Pantaenius is the only specialist in its comparison offering agreed-value and market-value policies side by side.
## What stands out - **Agreed fixed value:** on All Risk, a total loss pays the agreed sum with no deduction. - **New for old:** damaged equipment and gear is replaced without depreciation. - **Everything on board:** hull, machinery, equipment, gear, tenders, outboards and personal effects. - **No deductible in key situations:** total loss, damage at your permanent marina berth, grounding inspections, commercial towing and emergency costs. - **Cover that travels:** one policy adjusts as you move between cruising regions, and bluewater sailors can arrange worldwide cover. The standard Australian limit is 250 nm offshore, so confirm your area on the schedule. - **Personal accident cover** is also available.
## Good to know - It's yacht-only. A jet ski or trailer boat needs separate cover. - Motorboat racing is excluded from liability cover. - Expect premium pricing for the depth of cover and international claims support.
## How it compares Pantaenius is the specialist to beat for **offshore and international cruising**. [Club Marine](/directory/club-marine-boat-insurance) is broader (it covers every type of boat) and has a bigger emergency benefit. [New Wave](/directory/new-wave-insurance-boat-caravan-trailer-public-liability-insurance) and [Topsail](/directory/topsail-marine-insurance) are worth quoting if you race, or if you want a broker to shop the market.
## Questions to ask before you buy - **All Risk or Prime:** which suits my yacht's age and value? - What **cruising area** is on my schedule, and what does it cost to extend it for my next passage? - Which situations have **no deductible** at my berth? - Is **personal accident** cover worth adding for my crew?
